Starting with his research on the rock art of Elkab, Dirk presented a comprehensive approach for the study of Predynastic rock art in the Upper Egyptian Nile valley. Later he firmly demonstrated the existence of Epipalaeolithic rock art at el-Hosh, linked to fishing activities, which at the moment of its discovery constituted the earliest art known in Egypt. However, that changed when he discovered at el-Hosh, and especially Qurta, even earlier representations, dating to the Late Palaeolithic. His impact and influence on the study of Egyptian rock art will remain for a long time, if only because he managed to go beyond cataloguing and stressed the importance of integrating his discoveries into the archaeology and iconography of ancient Egypt.
