dc.description | Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was one of the most prolific French mapmakers at the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th century. Trained as a copperplate engraver, he had a difficult start in the mapping business. however, once established as a map producer and publisher on the Quay des Horloges in Paris, in 1687, he in 1690 became 'Geographer to the Dauphin' (Louis XVI's first son) and later to the Spanish King Philip V. For his maps, many of which were designed to glorify the reigning king's military and political achievements, he obtained royal privileges. Between 1690 and 1720, he published 12 atlases and no fewer than about 600 maps. In addition, he produced 26 multi-sheet wall maps, including one of Africa, published in 1698. On account of de Fer's early acceptance of the geodetical findings of the French Académie des Sciences, this map is considered a precursor, in terms of geographical designed and content, to the ground-breaking approach adopted in the map of Africa of 1700 by Guillaume Delisle. De Fer's wall map of Africa in its second state of 1705 is the subject of the present study. Following a review of Africa-maps produced up to 1698, the map itself is analysed in respect of its outline and contents, with particular emphasis on the captivating border illustrations of daily African life. The extensive French text surrounding the map and the commentaries found within the map are translated into German and added as Annexes. In the final chapter, a survey of maps of Africa by Nicola de Fer intends to stimulate further cartographic research. This rare wallmap with its surrounding decorative scenes has been reproduced at 75% of its original size and is inserted in the rear pocket. | |
