dc.descriptionA thorough knowledge of the presence and spatiotemporal patterns of vector species is of great importance to assess the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe. In 2018, one Culex modestus larva was collected during routine monitoring activities to intercept exotic Aedes mosquito species in the port of Antwerp (Kallo, Belgium). The larva was collected Mid-September in a small natural pond. Morphological identification was confirmed by DNA-based identification (COI sequence) and consequently it is the first official record of this West Nile bridge virus in Belgium. The paper also demonstrates the value of molecular techniques to identify or validate the presence of potential vector species.
