dc.description | The collection of M Leuven holds an exceptional ensemble of architectural design projects for the never-realised west tower of the church of Saint Peter’s: a parchment elevation drawing by Matheus de Layens and Gillis Stuerbout (1481); a similar drawing by Joos Metsys the younger (1505-1526), and finally the stone model by Jan II Beyaert (1524-1530). Together they not only perfectly illustrate the architectural design practice of the Burgundian Low Countries, but they are also at a point of transition when this architectural design practice was transmitted across disciplinary boundaries. Joos Metsys’ brother, Quinten would greatly benefit the architectural design practice during his flourishing career as one of Antwerp’s leading painters. This is just one of the many examples of how geometrical design knowledge which had been part of the design know-how of architects, sculptors and goldsmiths started to be disseminated to other professional groups such as painters. By focussing on the building site of Saint Peter’s in Leuven, this paper examines the socio-professional effects of strategic distribution of talent with family networks, with particular attention to the dissemination of architectural and geometrical design knowledge. Through the analysis of sketchbooks, early printmaking, and architectural drawings this paper will address the role of geometrical design as a means to bridge the disciplinary gap between various media. Finally we will see how the newly acquired geometrical knowledge aided painters in elevating their social status through their association with one of the Artes Liberales. | en_US |
