The fundamental role and importance of Dirk Huyge for the renewed interest in and development of rock art research in Egypt during the last decades cannot be underestimated. Starting with his research on the rock art of Elkab, Dirk presented a comprehensive approach for the study of Predynastic rock art in the Upper Egyptian Nile valley. Later he firmly demonstrated the existence of Epipalaeolithic rock art at el-Hosh, linked to fishing activities, which at the moment of its discovery constituted the earliest art known in Egypt. However, that changed when he discovered at el-Hosh, and especially Qurta, even earlier representations, dating to the Late Palaeolithic. His impact and influence on the study of Egyptian rock art will remain for a long time, if only because he managed to go beyond cataloguing and stressed the importance of integrating his discoveries into the archaeology and iconography of ancient Egypt. A full bibliography of Dirk Huyge’s publications (1977–2022) is provided at the end of this paper.en_US
