Bebol: the Belgian network for DNA barcoding

| dc.description | The Belgian Network for DNA Barcoding (BeBoL), launched in 2011, provides a multidisciplinary platform of 25 institutes active in DNA barcoding and molecular systematics. Most of the network s organizational tasks are executed by the Joint Experimental Molecular Unit (JEMU) of RBINS/RMCA. During the last few years, collaborative projects developed within the network resulted in publications focused on DNA barcoding, integrative taxonomy, phylogenetics, phylogeography, identification of cryptic species, biosecurity and conservation genetics (2011-2013: about 50 reported publications). The network activities also included organization of congresses (Third European Conference for the Barcode of Life in 2012, DNA in forensics 2014,), symposia (Metabarcoding of environmental samples in 2013), workshops (Genetic Analysis using R, Genome Analysis ToolKit in 2014) and individual training activities organized by network partners. The network is currently active in exploring Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). In this context, a specific workshop (Variant Discovery in Next-Generation Sequencing Data) as well as a symposium (Next generation sequencing, applications in science) were recently organized, with participants from all over Belgium. BeBoL is now aiming at further integrating DNA barcoding activities in Belgium and coordinate initiatives of the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL), of the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (ECBOL) and of the International Barcode of Life project (iBOL) at a national scale.
