    Description
International Study Day "Artists, Agents and Patrons from the Low Countries in the Iberian World", Brussels, Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, 9 December 2022.

Organised by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Organising committee: Eduardo Lamas, Géraldine Patigny, Bart Fransen, Valentine Henderiks. This scientific event was made possible with the financial support of the Embassy of Spain in Belgium. It is under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Archaeology of Belgium (ARAB-KAOB) and Belgian Art History Committee (BAHC).

Contrary to what historiography has assumed until very recently, the painter Juan de Roelas (d. 1625) was not a Spaniard but rather a Flemish immigrant, albeit well assimilated within Spanish court's and Seville's artistic circles. His probable Italian training, his status as a priest and his good relations with the court nobility made him an outstanding artist at the service of the propagation of the religious ideals of the Counter-Reformation. This presentation will raise the preference of certain religious orders, such as the Jesuits, for artists trained in the Low Countries.
