It is under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Archaeology of Belgium (ARAB-KAOB) and Belgian Art History Committee (BAHC).Contrary to what historiography has assumed until very recently, the painter Juan de Roelas (d. 1625) was not a Spaniard but rather a Flemish immigrant, albeit well assimilated within Spanish court's and Seville's artistic circles. His probable Italian training, his status as a priest and his good relations with the court nobility made him an outstanding artist at the service of the propagation of the religious ideals of the Counter-Reformation. This presentation will raise the preference of certain religious orders, such as the Jesuits, for artists trained in the Low Countries.
