0n June 16 and 17, a masterclass on PVA-borax gels was held. This workshop was organized by the20/2l contemporary art conservation and
restoration center in Porto (Portugal). lt was presented by two ltalian speakers Andrea Del Bianco, and Augusto Giuffredi. PVA/borax gel is a
chemical gel with many advantages: it is possible to introduce multiple
organic solvents into it, it does not leave gel residues, it has a high viscous property, it is elastic, malleable, adaptable to surfaces in relief, adheres to surfaces without being adhesive, transparent or opaque, offers a pH between 6 and 8, inexpensive, reusable and easy to implement.
However, the preparation requires following a few specific steps. A large
recent bibliography exists on the subject and in many fields ranging from
sculpture in plaster, stone, plastic, wax, to mural painting, ancient or modern easel paintings. practical tests have made it possible to approach this new technique, and have proved to be very encouraging. PVA/borax gels seem to be a very interesting additional tool for cleaning, especially when we are faced with uneven and inaccessible surfaces.
Participation in this masterclass was done as part of my work at the Royal lnstitute for Artistic Heritage.
