| dc.description | Figure hors norme dans l’Europe préindustrielle, Marie-Anne Simonis, épouse Biolley, ne se contente pas de reprendre temporairement les affaires familiales comme tant de veuves de l’Ancien Régime. Dès le milieu des années 1790, alors que son mari est encore en vie, cette Verviétoise quadragénaire prend la direction de l’une des plus puissantes firmes textiles de la région, fondée en 1724 par des immigrés savoyards et employant des centaines d’ouvriers. Issue elle-même d’une famille de grands drapiers réputés à l’échelle européenne, elle fait évoluer l’entreprise pendant plus de trente-cinq ans. Visionnaire, Marie-Anne modernise l’outil de production en faisant venir, avec son frère Iwan, l’ingénieur britannique William Cockerill, introduisant ainsi la révolution industrielle sur le continent. Elle expérimente l’élevage de moutons pour sécuriser l’approvisionnement en laine, tente des incursions dans le coton, fabrique des machines à vapeur et lance le premier projet mondial d’habitations ouvrières pour fidéliser sa main-d’œuvre. À Verviers, le peuple la surnomme d’ailleurs « la Grande Madame ». | en_US |
