| dc.description | (EN) How can historians contribute to restoring trust in public institutions? This work demonstrates how applied history – the use of historical knowledge and expertise to address societal challenges – can play a role in strengthening trust in public institutions. Before bridging the gap between institutions and their audiences, it is essential to first build bridges between academic and applied historians, and between historians and non-historians. Applied history is presented here as a practice that is ethically aware, methodologically grounded, and co-creative. Central to this approach is a "uses of the past" perspective: it examines how public institutions already engage with the past – for instance in their communication, policies, or self-image – and how these uses of history either support or undermine the image they wish to project. By working together with institutions to explore alternative ways of using the past, this approach fosters greater transparency, dialogue, and engagement. | en_US |
| nld |
