An extended fluctuation-dissipation theorem is suggested, which refers to the properties of the random forces rather than those of the climatic variables. The implications of this theorem are anlayzed in the framework of an energy-balance model. In particular, some characteristic properties of the noise associated with climatic variability are identified.
