High densities derived from the rates of change of period of the Echo satellite orbit can be explained by the presence of helium. Atomic oxygen or nitrogen cannot explain the slow decrease between 750 km and 1500 km. The presence of atomic hydrogen as claimed by several authors would require a too high concentration. The presence of helium is justified by calculations in which thermal diffusion was included for various temperature gradients leading to temperatures at the thermo-pause between 1000 °K and 2000°K. The density of helium is such that the mean molecular mass above 500 km depends on the ratio of helium and atomic oxygen concentrations. Helium ions can play a role in the region where the vertical distribution of ions is in electrostatic distribution.
