The effect of thermal diffusion on the vertical distribution of helium in the hetero-sphere is discussed. It is shown that an increase in the helium concentration of 1.4 to 2.4 at the thermo-pause level, due to thermal diffusion, leads to atmospheric densities explaining the observed drag of the satellite Echo 1.
