The first results of a validation study of MIPAS temperature profile measurements using a global dataset of radiosonde measurements is presented. This study is an extension of the validation analysis performed at the meteorological institute of Belgium in the framework of the Envisat Atmospheric Chemistry Validation Team. In the latter, the MIPAS temperature profiles were compared to the radiosoundings launched at the institute. The results showed, in general, excellent agreement between MIPAS and the soundings. However, several issues like a possible difference between day- or nighttime measurements could not be confirmed because of the small dataset. Therefore, we have now used a global set of radiosoundings in order to study the dependency of the difference between MIPAS temperature profiles and radiosonde temperature profiles on height, geolocation, time, time difference and distance.
