dc.description | An objective analysis scheme which uses specified functions for the representation of the data and computes the coefficients of the functions through the application of the TCHERBYCHEFF approximation method has been tested. In this study spherical harmonics were used to represent 500 mb height observations for the northern hemisphere. The resulting analyses are of the same quality as those obtained through standard techniques in data areas, but depart significantly from reality in blank areas unless some analysis control is provided.
