This paper explores an applied history initiative with the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) aimed at raising awareness of drought in Flanders, a region popularly perceived as wet, cold, and resistant to drought. The study evaluates VMM’s communication strategies and finds that historical perspectives are used primarily as quantitative measures, which limits their effectiveness in raising awareness and fostering responsibility. By integrating scientific data with historical narratives, the study advocates a comprehensive approach to modify relevant parts of the collective memory, enhance awareness, and promote effective action on drought.
