(NL) Marcel Broodthaers is widely recognised today as a major artist of the second half of the twentieth century. His work, which includes objects, films, writings and installations, has been thoroughly studied by international art historians. Before turning to the visual arts in 1964, at the age of 40, Broodthaers was first and foremost active as a poet. This period of his life – which spans more years than his career as a visual artist – has rarely been studied. The artist himself deliberately downplayed his literary activities, and the available information on that period of his life is particularly scarce. This paper addresses this blind spot by arguing that Broodthaers’s career cannot be properly understood without a detailed study of his artistic endeavours up until 1964. During these years, he developed several themes that would become prominent in his later artworks, such as the dialogue between words and images. He also built an extensive network of contacts in the literary, film and artistic circles of Brussels that would prove decisive for his artistic career. Thus, this paper shows that Broodthaers’s shift towards the art world was, in fact, years in the making.(FR) Marcel Broodthaers est aujourd’hui largement reconnu comme l’un des artistes majeurs de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Son oeuvre, qui comprend des objets, des films, des écrits et des installations, a fait l’objet d’études approfondies de la part d’historiens de l’art internationaux. Avant de se tourner vers les arts visuels en 1964, à l’âge de 40 ans, Broodthaers était avant tout un poète. Cette période de sa vie, qui s’étend sur plus d’années que sa carrière d’artiste plasticien, a rarement été étudiée. L’artiste luimême a délibérément minimisé ses activités littéraires, et les informations disponibles sur cette période de sa vie sont particulièrement rares. Cet article comble cette lacune en affirmant que la carrière de Broodthaers ne peut être correctement comprise sans une étude détaillée de ses activités artistiques jusqu’en 1964. Au cours de ces années, il a développé plusieurs thèmes qui deviendront importants dans ses oeuvres ultérieures, tels que le dialogue entre les mots et les images. Il s’est également constitué un vaste réseau de contacts dans les cercles littéraires, cinématographiques et artistiques bruxellois, qui s’avérera décisif pour sa carrière artistique. Ainsi, cet article démontre que le glissement de Broodthaers vers le monde de l’art s’est en réalité étendu sur plusieurs années.(NL) Marcel Broodthaers wordt vandaag algemeen erkend als een belangrijke kunstenaar uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw. Zijn werk, dat objecten, films, geschriften en installaties omvat, is grondig bestudeerd door internationale kunsthistorici. Voordat hij zich in 1964, op veertigjarige leeftijd, toelegde op de beeldende kunst, was Broodthaers in de eerste plaats actief als dichter. Deze periode van zijn leven – die langer duurde dan zijn carrière als beeldend kunstenaar – is zelden bestudeerd. De kunstenaar zelf bagatelliseerde zijn literaire activiteiten bewust, en de beschikbare informatie over die periode van zijn leven is bijzonder schaars. Dit artikel vult deze leemte op door te stellen dat Broodthaers’ carrière niet goed kan worden begrepen zonder een gedetailleerde studie van zijn artistieke activiteiten tot 1964. In die jaren ontwikkelde hij verschillende thema’s die later een prominente plaats zouden innemen in zijn kunstwerken, zoals de dialoog tussen woorden en beelden. Hij bouwde ook een uitgebreid netwerk op van contacten in de literaire, film- en kunstkringen van Brussel, dat van doorslaggevend belang zou blijken voor zijn artistieke carrière.
