(EN) Few addresses had as dramatic and lasting an impact as the words spoken by Patrice Lumumba in the morning of June 30, 1960. Paradoxically, however, scholarship on the genesis of the ‘Independence speech’ is scarce, transcriptions incomplete (at best), and attempts in finding the pages read by Lumumba virtually non-existent. In 2004 the CegeSoma came into possession of an original, annotated typescript of the speech, purported to be no less than the prime minister’s personal copy. What follows is an inquiry of this typescript AB2191 rooted in the methodology of archival science : an analysis of a concrete record, created from a concrete process of records creation, embedded in a concrete context. Firmly based on archival research and critically incorporating the existing literature, the present contribution refines and debunks some common assumptions about one of the most famous speeches in Congolese and Belgian history. Following a sketch of the acquisition history of AB2191 and of the institutional lifecycle of its likely records creator, an in-depth, external and internal ‘critique historique’ is formulated along four tracks. These four arguments support the central thesis that AB2191 is most likely Lumumba’s personal copy of his famous speech.(NL) Weinig redevoeringen hebben zo’n dramatische en aanhoudende impact gehad als de woorden uitgesproken door Patrice Lumumba in de voormiddag van 30 juni 1960. Paradoxaal genoeg is onderzoek naar de genese van de ‘Onafhankelijkheidstoespraak’ echter schaars, zijn transcripties in het beste geval onvolledig, en pogingen om de door Lumumba voorgedragen pagina’s terug te vinden quasi onbestaande. In 2004 kwam het CegeSoma in het bezit van een origineel, geannoteerd typoscript van de toespraak – naar verluidt Lumumba’s eigen exemplaar. Wat volgt is een analyse op basis van de methodologie van de archivistiek : een studie van een concreet document, ontstaan uit een concreet proces van archiefvorming, ingebed in een concrete context. Stevig geworteld in archivalisch bronnenonderzoek en kritisch gebruikmakend van de bestaande literatuur, verfijnt en ontkracht deze bijdrage enkele gangbare aannames over een van de beroemdste toespraken in de Congolese en Belgische geschiedenis. Na een schets van de verwervingsgeschiedenis van typoscript AB2191 en van de institutionele levenscyclus van zijn waarschijnlijke archiefvormer, wordt een diepgaande, externe en interne historische kritiek geformuleerd langs vier sporen. Deze vier argumenten ondersteunen de centrale stelling dat AB2191 hoogstwaarschijnlijk Lumumba’s persoonlijke exemplaar is van zijn beroemde toespraak.(FR) Peu de discours ont eu un retentissement aussi remarquable et durable que celui prononcé par Patrice Lumumba le matin du 30 juin 1960. Paradoxalement, cependant, les études sur la genèse du « discours de l’Indépendance » sont rares, les transcriptions incomplètes (au mieux) et les efforts pour (re)trouver les pages lues par Lumumba quasi inexistants. En 2004, le CegeSoma est entré en possession d’un tapuscrit original annoté du discours, qui ne serait autre que la copie personnelle du Premier ministre. Ce qui suit est une enquête autour de ce tapuscrit AB2191, fondée sur la méthodologie archivistique, c’est-à-dire : une analyse d’un document concret, issu d’un processus de production d’archives concret, ancré dans un contexte concret. Se fondant sur une recherche archivistique approfondie et intégrant de manière critique la littérature existante, la présente contribution affine et démystifie certaines hypothèses courantes sur l’un des discours les plus célèbres de l’histoire congolaise et belge. Après avoir esquissé l’historique de l’acquisition du tapuscrit AB2191 et le cycle de vie institutionnel de son producteur probable, une critique historique externe et interne approfondie est formulée selon quatre axes. Ces quatre arguments soutiennent la thèse centrale selon laquelle AB2191 est très probablement la copie personnelle de Lumumba de son célèbre discours.This article is published as part of Journal of Belgian History, 2026, LVI (1) .
