An empirical model used to forecast daily mean sulfur dioxide concentrations in a given area is described. The calculated forecast appears as an areal concentration pattern with the values valid at the measuring points of an existing network. The method is based on the determination of the significant eigenvectors of the covariance matrix, which is derived from the data of the considered stations. The corresponding principal components are linearly regressed with relevant meteorological parameters. This model, presently, is daily used to forecast the potential SO₂ pattern in five Belgian agglomerations.
