Momentum theory, in the classical sense of Betz, is applied to wind energy concentrator systems in order to determine their theoretical power limits. It is shown that the power coefficient based on frontal area for any concentrator system can be written in a form which is very similar to the form of a free turbine. The difference lies in the different functional relationships between the wind velocity at he rotor disk and the wind velocity behind the systems. This functional relationship is called the system function. Due to the different system functions, the maxima of the power coefficients are different. It is shown that the system function is favorable for the diffuser augmented concentrator system and that it is unfavorable for the tipvane system and the tornado system.
