The vast amount of literature produced around the Ghent Altarpiece poses a real challenge for anyone wishing to research this masterpiece by brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Over the years, hundreds of articles have been published in various languages, as well as numerous monographs and exhibition catalogues. In addition to these scientific contributions, there is a whole series of publications aimed at the general public. The angles covered are very varied, with a diversity of themes that does not facilitate a complete and relevant overview.
Is there any point in compiling a bibliography on this world-famous work, when there is already so much information available online? While some references have been widely shared, others have not enjoyed the same aura. This is why we have taken the initiative to publish this coherent overview of the existing literature on the Mystic Lamb, in the context of the restoration carried out by IRPA. Numerous studies have resulted in an online publication entitled 'The Ghent Altarpiece: a Bibliography', contributing to a comprehensive overview of the work on the painting, from the earliest to the most recent; the emphasis being on relevance rather than completeness.
